The Engineering Management Division (EMD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire an industrial ventilation engineer to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the management, implementation, and oversight of the site-wide Local Exhaust / Ventilation (LEV) program.
Purpose/Function of Job
This position is responsible for the management and implementation of ORNL s site-wide LEV program. LEV systems are typically provided as an engineering control to mitigate hazards for the protection of workers. This position is specifically provided to assist Research and Development (R&D) staff (e.g. laboratory fume hoods), operations personnel, facility management organizations, and the Engineering Management System Owner (MSO) in the successful and compliant implementation of effective LEV systems and the overall LEV program. The primary focus is on supporting R&D missions however, support of LEV systems for operations and facility staff is also an important aspect of the program.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
This position will serve as a SME for the LEV program and a key resource in the specification and design of needed LEV systems.
This position will be responsible for ensuring R&D and operations staff are provided with appropriate expertise and support to ensure adequate local exhaust / ventilation systems are provided. Additionally, the LEV program manager must ensure all associated requirements are identified and met.
This position will be responsible for refining and maintaining the command media for the program. This includes the development of new, or review and refinement of, lab-level procedures, exhibits, guidelines, and the inclusion of applicable codes and standards in ORNL s Standards Based Management system (SBMS). The command media addresses design, installation, modification, inspection and testing, and use of enclosing, capturing and receiving hoods.
Working with the Engineering MSO, Point of Contact (POC) and Quality Representative, this position will assist in the development and implementation of an assurance and assessment strategy for the LEV program. This strategy will be integrated with Engineering s multi-year assessment plan/schedule.
Specific activities and tasks for this position include:
Collaborate with R&D and operations staff to understand the work being planned and the associated LEV needs.
Collaborate with Safety and Health professionals who prescribe the performance criteria of the engineering controls of the LEV system.
Prepare specification and perform designs necessary to provide effective LEV systems.
Coordinate activities with facilities management and support staff in providing and maintaining required LEV systems.
Review and evaluate new or updated DOE Directives, federal requirements, and industry codes and standards for potential inclusion into the UT-Battelle contract and into LEV program requirements.
As requested, support the SMEs / program managers for related engineering programs: Engineering Design, Configuration Management, Fire Protection, Pressure System Safety, System Safety, and Welding/Burning/Hotwork; and
Abide by the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research Principles.

The successful candidate will hold a bachelor s degree in engineering, from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program. Candidates with a bachelor s degree in industrial hygiene, industrial safety, or a related physical sciences may also be considered depending on related experience.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years of documented experience with industrial ventilation systems and requirements. This shall include experience with local exhaust systems and a minimum of three years of documented experience related to industrial ventilation / local exhaust specification and design. Experience must also include field/facility experience with LEV systems in the areas of; evaluation, modification, troubleshooting, calculations, taking measurements/readings, and approval/commissioning. Candidates with fewer years of experience may also be considered qualified, depending on the type and complexity of engineering-related experience and/or other credentials.
The ability to acquire and maintain a Department of Energy Q security clearance (comparable to DOD Top-Secret) is a requirement.
This position requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing.
This position requires the successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate would have a working knowledge of applicable LEV requirements. Examples include; ASHRAE Standards, ANSI/ASSP Z9 Ventilation Systems Standards, ACGIH Ventilation Design Guide, select NFPA Codes and Standards (e.g. NFPA 45), the International Building Code (and companion codes such as the International Mechanical Code), DOE Order 420.1C, Facility Safety, DOE Standard 1073, DOE Standard 1189, ASME Codes, etc.
The ideal candidate would have documented training in Industrial Ventilation design, testing, and troubleshooting. Experience with HEPA filters used in nuclear/radiological applications considered a plus.
The ideal candidate would have experience with the development of drawings/sketches of designs. Experience with computer aided design & drafting (CADD) with MicroStation or related software programs considered a plus.
Registered Professional Engineer, Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH), and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) considered a plus.
The ideal candidate would have experience with the configuration management programs for LEV systems in industrial, laboratory, and radiological facilities. A basic knowledge of safety requirements for nuclear facilities is considered a plus.
The ideal candidate would have good oral communication and technical writing skills and will be proficient with common computer software used in the office environment.
The ideal candidate would have a strong sense of customer support and possess the social skills necessary to have positive interactions and collaborations with fellow ORNL staff including research staff, facility engineers, health and safety professionals, and staff from other engineering disciplines.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
